The Hilltop Microfinance Initiative (HMFI) is managed and staffed by Georgetown University students who choose to commit their time without compensation. Our organization prides itself on the passion of our members to provide one-on-one services. As a 501(c)3 non-profit organization registered in the District of Columbia, we are financed entirely by the generosity of individuals and foundations who are committed to our ideal of financial empowerment.

Client Services

  • Forges new partnerships with community development organizations
  • Meets with clients to learn about their business and collect essential documents
  • Manages and reviews client applications
  • Effectively communicates with small business loan clients and assists with the application process

  • Maintains HMFI’s financial viability and sustainability by seeking new corporate partners
  • Applies for corporate grants
  • Plans and executes fundraisers and donation drives
  • Organizes alumni and donor outreach and appreciation initiative

Group Financial Coaching

  • Delivers financial coaching modules to group audiences with an interactive teaching style
  • Creates relevant module content and integrates into existing curriculum
  • Tracks client performance and engagement

Marketing

  • Promotes and advertises HMFI’s services and mission through print and online media
  • Curates overall brand image through website, blog, newsletter, and social media content
  • Supports other departments’ initiatives with strategic marketing materials

Monitoring

  • Underwrites and disburses small business loans
  • Tracks client payments, loan portfolio, and internal finances
  • Helps create the organization’s yearly budget
  • Develops and tracks metrics to quantify our impact

Divya Shah

Chief Executive Officer

The CEO serves as the strategic leader and face of the organization. Through this, he/she owns all senior external relationships, maintains the relationship with the Board of Directors, and manages the rest of the executive staff.

Marcus Phillips

Chief Financial Officer

The CFO of HMFI assures the financial and legal welfare of the Hilltop Microfinance Initiative by managing the organization’s budget, accounting, investment strategy, capital structure, credit reporting, and regulatory needs. Crucially, the CFO is also the final decision maker on all loan disbursals for the organization.

The COO ensures the recruitment and development of HMFI’s human capital. This includes, but is not limited to, the new hire and leadership recruiting processes, internal feedback and review processes, and the professional development of general staff members.

Daniel Kiely

Chief Strategy Officer

The CSO leads growth-oriented strategic initiatives with a focus on enhancing impact for existing clients and expanding impact to new clients. The CSO facilitates project management of these initiatives to guide HMFI’s responsible growth, and additionally manages organization information sharing and technology platforms.

The Director of CST leads a team which organizes outreach to spread awareness about HMFI in the DC area and works with clients throughout the loan application process.

Yugo Kuga

Director of Development

The Director of Development leads fundraising initiatives and grows the relationships with HMFI’s volunteers, donors, and stakeholders.

Harnoor Sachar

Director of Group Financial Coaching

The Director of Group Financial Coaching is responsible for scheduling sessions along with initiating and maintaining partnerships. As head of the department, the director also oversees the creation of new training content to administer to partners.

Diana Tuebo

Director of Marketing

The Director of Marketing manages the marketing department with a focus on marketing HMFI to clients in the DMV area and maintaining HMFI’s social media presence.

James McGillick

Director of Monitoring

The Director of Monitoring manages the lending pipeline as well as the underwriting team that focuses on the holistic review of small business loan applicants.

The Head of DEI is responsible for building and strengthening HMFI’s brand and creating a positive internal culture in line with HMFI’s mission.

The Head of Tech originates initiatives to improve the efficiency and organization of HMFI’s technological capabilities, balancing department-specific projects with broader organizational advancement.

The Board

Eugene Goldberg

Chair

Eugene graduated from Georgetown in 2008 and is one of the founding members of HMFI. He majored in Finance and Accounting in the MSB. Eugene is currently the President of Consumer Health at Masimo Corporation, and previously worked at Sound United, WPP Group, and New Mountain Capital.

Max O’Neill

Vice Chair

Max graduated from Georgetown in 2008 and is one of the founding members of HMFI. He majored in Economics, and went on to earn a JD from Georgetown Law. He is currently a Senior Vice President in the Real Estate Group at Blackstone. Prior to joining Blackstone in 2018, Max was an Associate at Sullivan & Cromwell LLP.

Alex Honjiyo

Director

Alex graduated from Georgetown in 2013 with a B.S. in International Politics and Master’s in Global Business and Finance. He was the CEO of HMFI in 2010-2012. Alex is currently serving as Deputy Director of the Health Finance Coalition, and has worked at Chemonics International and the InterAmerican Development Bank.

Will Miller

Director

Will graduated from Georgetown in 2014 with a B.S. in Science, Technology, and International Affairs, and later earned an MBA from Harvard University. Will served as the CEO of HMFI in 2013. He is currently working as the Director of Strategy & Operations at TruePill, and has also worked at Antara Health, L.E.K. Consulting, and Capsule.

Mohit Narang

Director

Mohit graduated from Georgetown in 2008 and is one of the founding members of HMFI. He majored in Economics and graduated from the College. Mohit is currently the Director of Offer Management at Pearson, and previously worked at Radiant Energy Systems, Guggenheim Partners, and Sands Capital Management. He is also a screenwriter, and wrote and produced a feature-length independent film which premiered at the Austin Film Festival.

Jeff Reid

Director

Jeff is a Professor of the Practice and the Founding Director of Georgetown Entrepreneurship Initiative at the Georgetown McDonough School of Business. He is an expert in entrepreneurship and venture capital, and joined HMFI in 2022.
